Euthanasia
As pet owners, there is no more important or difficult decision we make for our pets than when it is time to say goodbye. If you need help with knowing if it is time, there are some helpful resources here:
If you prefer to have a phone consultation to discuss your pet’s specific concerns and need help deciding if it is time to say goodbye, you can book at 30 minute phone or video consultation (please contact us for pricing).
Once you have made the decision to say goodbye, keeping your pet at home means they are surrounded by familiar scents and sounds and it can be less stressful experience for them, and for you. In home euthanasia can also be helpful for pets that get very anxious going to a clinic or travelling in a carrier. This service can also be helpful for people or pets who are not very mobile due illness or any other reason, or for people that would like many family members or friends present.
What can I expect? Dr Amanda will come to your home. You can have any family members or friends present who wish to be there for you and your pet. Your pet can be anywhere in the house or yard that they are most comfortable. We ask that other pets are not present for the transition as often this can distract away from the pet who is transitioning, but they are welcome to spent time together afterwards. Dr. Amanda will give a quick injection that will allow your pet to go from a state of consciousness to a state of unconsciousness. Your pet will be able to hear and smell you and they will know that you are with them. Dr. Amanda will then make a PawPal paw print impression if you wish. When you are ready, the final injection will be given through a small catheter in their leg vein. It is a fast and painless procedure. You can spend as much time as you like with your pet and other pets are welcome to come and say goodbye at this time.
What are the aftercare options? Some families choose to coordinate aftercare arrangements on their own. In this case, we will perform the euthanasia and leave your pet’s remains with you.
If you prefer to have us coordinate aftercare arrangements, we are proud to partner with Pet Heaven Crematorium and Funeral Chapel to provide you with two options:
General Cremation – your pet will be cremated with other pets and their ashes will not be returned to you.
Private Cremation – Your pet will be cremated by themselves, and the ashes will be returned to you. The ashes will be returned in a beautiful secure resting bag. If you wish to have a different vessel such as an urn, you can select a product here and let us know at the time of the appointment which vessel you would like: https://petheavencalgary.com/memorial-products/
Dr. Amanda is not able to take your pet’s remains after the appointment unless you decide on general or private cremation, as we have no place to keep the remains.
If you have elected for us to arrange aftercare, a member of Pet heaven Crematorium will meet us at the location to help transport your pet’s remains. Your pet’s ashes will be ready for pickup within 48 hours at the Pet heaven location, along with an ink pawprint if you wish. Dr. Amanda can also return your pet’s ashes to you if you prefer.
Please let us know beforehand if your pet is anxious, painful, or if they dislike being touched. We will provide pre-visit medications to ensure they are calm and relaxed prior to the appointment and to ensure everyone’s comfort and safety.
We unfortunately cannot perform euthanasia specifically for aggression or for behavioral concerns. Please contact us and we can help you find a vet who can safely perform this service.
